MON - SUN: 9PM - 1AM
With an atmosphere that’s part Weimar Berlin, part New York basement dive, with a touch of public convenience thrown in, Cellar Door is not your average bar.
For a start, it serves snuff as well as sophisticated cocktails (not to mention a huge range of wines and beers). It has a text message jukebox, and it’s based in what, in a previous incarnation, was the most famous gents’ toilet in Theatreland.
Where once its subterranean facilities reputedly played host to Wilde, Orton and Gielgud, now cabaret artists, burlesque dancers, drag queens, comedians and musicians take to the stage each night at 9pm.
Entry is free, with reserved seats or guaranteed admission available in advance for a fee. If you’re determined to get stuck in, there’s a Cellar Door Keycard available for £30 a year, offering all sorts of special deals.
