Adelphi Theatre

The Aldephi Theatre is a Covent Garden stalwart that was founded on The Strand in 1806 as the Sans Pareil Theatre. The Adelphi has since been rebuilt and renamed several times over.

The current Grade II listed building dates from 1930, designed by Ernest Schaufelberg in a bold Art Deco style.

The 1,500 seat Adelphi Theatre enjoys close ties with Andrew Lloyd Webber and has played host to many of his most successful musicals. In an earlier incarnation, the theatre was famous for its adaptations of the early works Charles Dickens. It was also infamous as the site, in December 1897, of the murder of one of the country’s most famous performers, William Terriss, by a deranged, unemployed actor.
