Amid the grand, ornate Victoriana of the rest of Covent Garden’s theatreland, the Cambridge Theatre stands out for the steel, concrete and clean lines of its 1920s modernist architecture.
Over the past decade, some of its theatrical successes have been as head-turning as its design, featuring three of Covent Garden’s biggest critical and commercial hits—the incendiary Jerry Springer: The Opera, the crowd-pleasing Chicago and the exuberantly funny Matilda: The Musical.
CURRENT PRODUCTION: MATILDA: THE MUSICAL
Matilda, Roald Dahl’s much-loved tale of an extraordinary child with hideous parents is given the musical treatment by the combined talents of Tim Minchin and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Matilda The Musical is the story of Matilda Wormwood, a child with an incredible talent for learning. Despite being hampered by unscrupulous, uncaring parents who care neither for their daughter or for education, she excels intellectually and even discovers a rather unique talent. Each time her parents treat her badly, the young Matilda teaches them a lesson.
The hit family show won a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards when it opened in London's West End and four Tony Awards when it transferred to Broadway.
Matilda The Musical is adapted for the stage by writer Dennis Kelly, whose previous plays include The Gods Weep, Osama The Hero and Love And Money. The show’s music and lyrics come from award-winning Australian musician and comedian Tim Minchin.
Matthew Warchus, who directs Matilda The Musical, is also the director of Ghost The Musical and has previously directed productions including The Lord Of The Rings, Art, God Of Carnage and Speed-The-Plow.
Matilda The Musical is suitable for theatregoers aged six and older.
