Join Apple Covent Garden from 8th until 22nd April for Family Camp 2019. Parents and kids aged from 8 to 12 will spend their time in the stunning tech flagship store and learn new creative skills in hands-on sessions specially designed for kids.
Coding Lab for Kids - Sphero Tube Map Maze
April 7th and 14th, 12.30pm
Kids will explore coding with Sphero robots by programming simple movements, loops and more. Participants will have then navigate their robot through the tube map maze, with journey challenges set from the likes of Brixton to Westminster. Kids can bring their own iPad and Sphero robot, or we’ll provide them. Kids will get hands-on with iPad and Sphero Sprk+ robot and will walk away with an understanding and appreciation of coding
Design Lab for Kids – Kidesign
April 8th and 15th, 11am, Covent Garden
Kidesign is a London-based creative studio specialising in educational games, toys and activities for children. Their mission is to inspire the next generation of problem solvers and equip them with creativity and imagination. London-based creative entrepreneur Dejan Mitrovic will host the session. Participants will learn design, drawing and CAD skills and will experience what it looks like to be a designer-architect and to build an entire new sustainable island city in 3D. This session encourages individual creativity, but also connects all of the participants to work together and contribute to the bigger project of building an entire city, therefore demonstrating how complex such systems are and how important group work is.
Art Lab for Kids - Little Inventors
April 9th and 16th, 11am, Covent Garden
Little Inventors is a worldwide project that challenges children to think up invention ideas and then asks skilled makers, experts and manufacturers to turn the best ideas into real things for exhibition. Started by artist and inventor Dominic Wilcox in 2016, it aims to inspire and encourage children to develop a lifelong passion for creative thinking, problem solving and innovation. Gareth Lloyd, the Chief Maker at Little Inventors will host the session. Gareth will inspire the kids through invention. He will then guide them to create fantastic invention ideas that could make the city more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Using Procreate on the iPad and with Little Inventors’ help, kids will use their imaginations to create innovative solutions to build a sustainable city.
Art Lab for Kids - Zoom Rockman
April 10th and 17th, 11am, Covent Garden
Zoom Rockman is a British Artist/Satirist whose comic strip, Skanky Pigeon first appeared in the Beano when he was 12 years old. Age 16, he became the youngest cartoonist in Private Eye Magazine history and has since become a regular contributor. Comic artist Zoom Rockman will discuss his work to date, focussing on the creation of Skanky Pigeon — which first appeared in The Beano when Zoom was 12, and also looking at his work that has followed, including his own award winning comic, ‘The Zoom!’. Zoom will then show how he draws Skanky Pigeon, and ask participants to draw a new character as part of a comic strip.
Design Lab for Kids – Smartibot
April 17th, 2pm, Covent Garden
Ross Atkin is a London based designer and engineer. His work has been displayed in the Design Museum’s Designs of the Year exhibition and Fast Company Magazine’s Innovation By Design Awards. He is also recognised internationally as an expert on the Internet of Things having been invited to speak on the subject at high profile technology and design conferences from San Francisco and Austin to Johannesberg and Beirut. Ross has founded Participants will then get the chance to experience first hand engineering principles like weight distribution and torque and design through experimentation and iteration. They will learn how to design and build an appcontrolled robot using Smartibot, potatoes and other vegetables and prepare to get into “Botato Wars”, the world's only competitive vegetable-based robot event.
Art Lab for Kids – Disney
April 12th and 19th, 2pm, Covent Garden
Disney Theatrical Productions, a division of The Walt Disney Studios, was formed in 1994 and operates under the direction of Thomas Schumacher. They have worked of many musicals including Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Tarzan and Aladdin. Hands on element will be based around creating your own Agrabah using the iPad Pro and Procreate. The session will be accompanied by a performance with Jasmin and Aladdin and mannequins with costumes for inspiration.
