Tales of Covent Garden: Lauren Baker
Another day, another tale from Covent Garden! Lauren Baker has opened her pop – up gallery in Covent Garden and has been getting to know the legendary Floral Street.
Where do you work and what do you do?
I've opened Lauren Baker Gallery at 18 Floral Street. I'm a multi-disciplinary artist. I'm showing my latest artworks in the gallery and I'm working on the next collection downstairs in the basement. My current artwork aims to visually interpret unseen energy. I'm known for expressing positive messages and mantras in neon, such as 'Everything is going to be f****** amazing'.
How long have you worked in Covent Garden?
We launched the gallery earlier this month and have had rave reviews! I'm excited about the schedule of exhibitions, creativity talks, and workshops.
What is your favourite thing about Covent Garden?
I love the independent creative boutiques in Covent Garden. I'm usually rushing about so it’s the place I know I’m certain to find a unique and special gift. I'm crazy about Earl Grey tea - I drink about eight cups a day so I always pop to the tea shops such as Ladurée. I change my scenery often to keep new ideas flowing. I'm into theatre too and I adore wandering around people watching, Covent Garden feels so 'alive' and fun by the theatres. It's such a great place to hang.
Tell us a story about Covent Garden…
By the 18th century, Covent Garden had become a well-known red-light district. I'm bringing the red lights back, without the seediness and with a whole lot of love!
Which retailer in Covent Garden would you love to collaborate with?
I'd love to collaborate with Paul Smith. What a legend!
