Tales of Covent Garden: NARS
Welcome to the next feature in our on-going content called Tales of Covent Garden! Each month, Covent Garden will be bringing you exclusive interviews of the people who live, work and love Covent Garden. Next up, is Clayton Reid, who is the Senior Boutique Make-up Artist at the NARS Covent Garden boutique.
Where do you work and what do you do?
I’m Clayton Reid and I am the Senior Boutique Make-up Artist at the NARS Covent Garden boutique. I lead the NARS vision of beauty and artistry. We have an elite team of make-up artists here and I try to lead and inspire them and help with their creativity, artistry and skill.
How long have you worked in Covent Garden?
I’ll have worked in Covent Garden a year in October!
What is your favourite thing about Covent Garden?
I absolutely love Christmas in Covent Garden, there’s a proper sense of festive spirit: all the Christmas lights and just working in retail at Christmas is so exciting. I also love that Covent Garden is becoming a make-up hub, we’re a pro store meaning we stock pro products which means we constantly see lots of different make-up artists in here and get to share stories and tips; it’s a very creative area.
Tell us a story about Covent Garden?
Well, we get a lot of celebrities in here and a few months ago I was fortunate enough to do the make-up of Humans actress Ruth Bradley and she came in again today, which was lovely.
Tell us a secret about Covent Garden?
Well this is the NARS flagship boutique, it’s actually the first boutique in Europe. We always have little exclusive launches and products as well as special pro products you can’t get anywhere else. It’s always worth popping in to see what we have in.
What would you say a NARS fan would have to do on a day trip to Covent Garden?
They should definitely book in for a NARS experience. We have a studio space downstairs where you can get your make-up done in a nice peaceful space. Obviously being a boutique you get really inspired by the NARS story; we have Francois’s bookcase which means you can have a flick through his books while you’re waiting. We’re almost like a bit of a make-up shop and an exhibition at the same time, which is great! There’s also loads of great restaurants and a cocktail around here is a must have!
What’s your must buy Christmas present from NARS?
This year we have a collection inspired by the photographer Man Ray. There’s a whole colour story launching at Christmas time and there’s some gifts as well. The eye shadow palette is a must have this year for a Christmas present, it has those sort of colours that you can wear everyday as well as those more NARS-esque bolder colours for any parties. The palette is really enduring and alluring as well.
