Garrick Theatre

The Garrick Theatre opened in 1889 and in its early years specialised in the performance of melodrama.

The Garrick Theatre was financed by playwright W. S. Gilbert in 1889 and designed by Walter Emden. C. J. Phipps was  brought in as a consultant to assist with the theatre planning after an underground river was discovered in the excavation, causing some difficulty.

The Garrick initially specialised in melodrama, however has since been renowned for its comedies, including a four year run of No Sex Please, We’re British andThe Drifters Girl.
