The History of King Street

King Street is steeped in history and cultural significance. Home to the area’s oldest surviving building at 43 King Street, the street played a key role in Covent Garden’s commercial evolution, with shops first recorded in 1667 and a coffee house established by Bedford Street in 1691.

Over time, King Street became a thriving centre for tailors, cabinet-makers, and booksellers, later attracting trades linked to art, journalism, and theatre. The street also celebrates notable figures through its blue plaques, including the National Sporting Club (1891–1929), which helped establish boxing in Britain and was founded by John Fleming and A.F. “Peggy” Bettinson at 43 King Street—now Galleria Melissa. Another plaque honours composer Thomas Augustine Arne, best known for ‘Rule, Britannia!’, who lived at 31 King Street and was a leading figure in British theatre music during the 18th century.

Visitors to King’s Street can experiences luxury boutiques alongside some fine dining establishments like clos Maggiore. It is also home to the Iconic Covent Garen Apple store that has events such as product launches and free workshops.
